Track of the day
The White Stripes –You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)
A strange choice of second single from Icky Thump. Compared with frantic, pell-mell album tracks such as Conquest and Little Cream Soda, You Don’t Know What Love Is… can’t help but feel a little bloodless, a little safe.
Still, Icky Thump is an album that reveals hidden depths the longer you live with it. Right now our favourite track is Rag And Bone, a jittery, stop-start riffathon that finds Jack and Meg conjuring a fantastical, faintly sinister alternate reality, somewhere between Oliver Twist and Dr Seuss. Has anyone ever written a song so flamboyantly, creepily odd? It’s fabulous art – yet it also rocks with awesome power. All of which means we’re more excited about seeing The White Stripes on their upcoming arena tour than we have been since the time of White Blood Cells.
But we digress. Here’s the video for You Don’t Know What Love Is…
There’s a live version of the track hosted here.
