New To Q: Iron And Wine

Comments

Few artists have balanced leftfield credibility with commercial reward as expertly as Iron And Wine, aka Florida-based indie-folk troubadour Sam Beam.

Enigmatic and softly-spoken, Beam rarely gives interviews, preferring to let his bucolic, Elliott Smith-style lullabies do the talking. As a result, he’s every hip music blogger’s singer-songwriter of choice. Yet Beam is also seriously wealthy, having licensed his music to film soundtracks (such as Garden State) and major ad campaigns (M&Ms, Ask.com).

A clever bloke, then: perhaps he learned his marketing savvy during his stint as Professor of Film and Cinematography at Miami International University of Art & Design.

Either way, Iron And Wine’s third album The Shepherd’s Dog, out 27 September, finds him retreating somewhat from the mainstream, replacing his trademark lilting melodies with terse, hypnotic, acoustic guitar grooves. It’s still a powerful formula though, best exemplified by lead single Boy With A Coin, which you can download from this blog here.
