The (Unofficial) National Anthem, a classic chorus, great lyrics, and the best instrumental middle section ever, deceptively sounds like a key change, but in fact isn't.

  • I get mixed up between 'Technically perfect' and 'Perfect to my ears'. Not being a trained musician or songwriter, I can't really judge what is technically perfect so my judgements are usually made on my idea of taste.

I don't know if a song is well crafted/constructed/balanced, although I can make a good guess. I can certainly tell if it's well sung, and tend to criticise on that although really that shouldn't have any impact on the judgement of the actual song. It does put me off a song if I don't like the way it's sung.

So, songs which are perfect to my ears...

    Live Forever - Oasis
This is an uplifting song which can also move me in the other direction if I hear it in unhappy circumstances. The lyrics appeal to me as they are basic but, it would appear, heartfelt.

There She Goes - The La's
Another uplifting melody, which never fails to make me smile.

    The Scientist - Coldplay
I can't define why but it moves me. To me it always sounds perfect and it's a song that I have to listen to until the end, I couldn't turn the radio off in the middle of it!

    Queen ***** - Bowie
How can anyone not tap along to the beat of this song? How can anyone not love the lyric:
'She's so swishy in her satin and tat
In her frock coat and bippety boppety hat'.
I've always wanted that hat, but I just haven't found the bippety boppety shop yet.

    Thunder Road - Springsteen
I agree that Born To Run is probably a more popular song for the masses, but to my (untrained) ear this is more pleasing.
