In 2005, New York multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon dropped out of college (having only lasted a day) and moved to Amsterdam. There he lived in a building where "a weird Serbian artist guy", pining for his homeland, blasted Balkan brass music from his top-floor apartment.
In attempting to replicate that strange, melancholy sound back home in the States, Condon – aka Beirut – came up with debut album Gulag Orkestra, one of 2005’s most critically acclaimed releases.
Among that album’s influential fans were Arcade Fire, who offered Condon the use of their private studio to record the follow-up, The Flying Club Cup, released 8 October. It’s another strange, hypnotic record, quite unlike anything else you’re likely to hear in this or any other year.
