Klaxons vs Muse

Comments

Last night's Mercury Prize, then. Yesterday on Q4music we listed the great albums, such as OK Computer, that were bafflingly overlooked by the Mercury panel. In years to come Amy Winehouse's Back To Black will be listed in that same category.

After all, if the prize is decided on the strength of the songs - and not the personal tastes of a London-centric media clique - then surely Back To Black should have walked it. This is an album that has crossed genre boundaries and entered the cultural bloodstream of the nation in a way Klaxons could never dream of.

Plus, Winehouse's performance on the night - blinking into the stage lights, accompanied only by acoustic guitar - was a moment of genuine blues power. So much so that when Klaxons were announced as the winners there was a full 5 seconds of stunned silence before the room erupted into applause.

Anyway, where were we? Oh yes, Track Of The Day... For those willing to look beyond Myths Of The Near Future, there are some excellent Klaxons bootlegs out there. Our favourite is Supermassive Rainbow, an ingenious fusion of debut single Gravity's Rainbow (Soulwax Remix) with Muse's Supermassive Black Hole.

You can find it on this blog right here.

  • What a stupid thing to say!! Amy Winehouse has done nothing new, she is making songs that would have fit in 50 years ago, yet everyone thinks it is amazing and something new. The reason the Klaxons won the award was because it is a new style of music that they created themselves, it will not be one of those nights when a band won who shouldn't have. Amy Winehouse is just fitting into a genre that has been around for decades and her performance on the night was not brilliant, bat for lashes performance was leagues ahead. "crossed genre boundaries and entered the cultural bloodstream of the nation" is a riduclous thing to say, older people like Amy Winehouse because it reminds them of their youth, young people like her because she is tattoed and does drugs (pete doherty is in same bracket i think), plues she is always in the tabloids so yea she's in the "bloodstream of the nation" but "crossed genres", i'm not sure about that, like already stated it is nothing new. There is no doubting that she does not have an amazing voice and talent to write songs but in no way has she created an album of the year.
I may not in the long run think Klaxons debut album was the best of the year but in no way should Amy Winehouse have won the award. Maps, Bat For Lashes, Arctic Monkeys and Jamie T have all produced albums in which are better than Amy Winehouse.

  • i completely agree with the review, winehouse was robbed. her music is nothing short of absolutely amazing despite how much i genuinely love klaxons and i really do, i'm just being honest! we all know, even the boys themselves that they aren't exactly worthy winners. kudos to them anyway cos fuck all can be done about it now i suppose.
