Midlands trio The Young Knives were nobody’s tip to win the Mercury Prize. A shame, since their winningly skew-whiff debut, Voices Of Animals And Men, was actually one of the most rewarding albums on the shortlist.
The plan now, according to bassist House Of Lords, is to “bring out a second album of shit songs like every other band" – though the first single to be taken from it, Terra Firma suggests that’s extremely unlikely. Debuted to an impressive response at Reading/Leeds, if you loved the quirky charm of Voices… this is bound to hit the spot too.
