As snappy tags go, “the Grimsby Kings Of Leon” leaves a little to be desired, but it’s a fair way of describing this quartet of 18-year-olds, whose frontman Leon Blanchard is very much from the Caleb Followill school of raspy vocals.
Having formed less than a year ago, The Brightlights are not yet the finished article – when they played the main stage at V Festival as winner’s of the Road To V competition drummer James Buxton could barely keep the most rudimentary of rhythms - but, crucially, the tunes shine through.
Debut single Inspired By highlights the band’s potential, all small-town frustration and easy-to-swallow hooks, powered along by Blanchard’s lozenge-dodging howl. Produced by Feeder’s Grant Nicholas, it’s out as a single 1 October – but you can hear a demo version right now on their [Myspace]
