New To Q: These New Puritans

Comments

We weren’t convinced by These New Puritans to begin with. Spawned by the same uber-cool Southend scene as The Horrors, and having composed music for a Dior Homme fashion show, they smacked of style-over-substance: great press shots, shame about the music.

Then we heard their debut album Beat Pyramid and completely changed our minds. The ragged, hectoring punk of their Myspace demos has gone, replaced by sleek, motorik rhythms. Meanwhile, frontman Jack Barnett’s incantatory vocals whip up a sense of jet-black, narcotic intensity: imagine The Fall covering the songs of Nine Inch Nails.

Beat Pyramid is out 5 November, preceded by double A-sided single Colours/ Numbers on 15 October 15. But for now, check out the none-more-DIY video that accompanied the band’s debut release, Elvis.
