New To Q: Milburn

Comments

What a difference a song makes. After last year’s blink-and-you-missed it debut album Well Well Well, Sheffield’s Milburn were derided as shameless Arctic Monkeys copyists (an unfair accusation, perhaps, given that Milburn formed first). Some even questioned whether the foursome would get as far as a second album.

Comeback single What Will You Do (When The Money Goes)? won’t dispel the Monkeys jibes – although the song’s woozy air of minor-key, Merseybeat psychedelia actually has more in common with The Coral – but it does look likely to save Milburn from oblivion.

Currently getting hammered by Radio 1, XFM and Capital, it’s a big step-up from the simplistic, Playskool indie of the first album, and should see the band finally step out of their famous mates’ shadow. It’s just a shame there’s nothing quite as good on parent album These Are The Facts, out 24 September.
