Adele is the latest artist to emerge from the Myspace-savvy, glottal-stopping London scene that gave us Jamie T, Jack Penate and Kate Nash.
Where sets Adele apart from her youthful peers, though, is her voice - a startling, tremulous croon that sounds like it should belong to a world-weary Motown diva rather than a 19-year-old from Brixton.
She recently joined the select club of artists (Cherry Ghost was the last) to have appeared on Later.. With Jools Holland before releasing a note of music. The song she played, Daydreamer, deals with unrequited love, and its lovelorn sentiments would seem to be representative of Adele’s debut album, due in January 2008.
“Daydreamer is about this boy I was in love with,” she explains. “He was Bi and I couldn’t deal with that. The whole album is about love. It’s quite a sad album, [with songs about] being cheated on and not getting what you want.”
On 16 November Adele plays an exclusive show at Q’s monthly live music night – Q The Music Live At The Hospital. Click here to apply for tickets.
