How precarious is the lot of the indie rock band. Northampton’s The Departure signed to Parlophone in 2004 after playing just three gigs. A few months later we included them in a special issue of Q devoted to exciting new British music, tipping the foursome to replicate the success of Editors - another band who channeled icy, post-punk influences into radio-friendly indie.
Sadly, the band’s speedy ascent was followed by an equally precipitous decline. Debut album Dirty Words failed to build on the early buzz, and in 2006 guitarist Lee Irons and drummer Andy Hobson quit.
But if comeback single 7 Years is to be their epitaph, it’s a worthy one, showcasing a newfound ear for a sleek chorus hook. And best of all, it’s free to download from thedeparture.co.uk. Hurrah.
