Rock biopics coming your way

Comments

This weekend sees the long-awaited release of Ian Curtis biopic Control (read our review here). It’s the latest in a wave of music biopics inspired by the Oscar-winning success of Johnny Cash flick Walk The Line. Here’s 5 more currently in the pipeline.

Kurt Cobain: About A Son
A rock flick with a difference: Cobain himself provides a voiceover from beyond the grave, his words taken from over 25 hours of interviews with journalist Michael Azerrad. Apparently Cobain discusses shooting himself. It all sounds monumentally exploitative.

Gospel According To Janis
Director Penepole Spheeris has a good track record: she was responsible for the classic 1981 punk documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization. However, the fact that both Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan have, at various stages, been in the frame to play the lead role in this Janis Joplin biopic, suggests it's doomed to failure. It's slated for an early 2008 release.

I’m Not There
Director Todd Haynes seems to think getting six different actors to play Bob Dylan is some kind of avant-garde masterstroke. Sure, Cate Blanchett’s portrayal looks impressive, but Heath Ledger and Richard Gere? Come off it. Who else was on the shortlist, Chevy Chase?
Turkey probability: 73%

The Passenger
Elijah Wood plays the lead role in this $8 million Iggy Pop biopic, which hits screens summer 2008. Mr Pop himself has said the script is a “work of art,” so the end product is unlikely to be an outright stinker.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
This is more like it. Written by Hollywood golden child Judd Atapow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and released January 2008, the spoof biopic features a cameo from Jack White as a belligerent, greaseball rock n’roller with delusions of grandeur. So not too much of a stretch there then.
Turkey probability: 41%

  • Wow, Looks like you were wrong on all counts. Maybe it's time for a career change. You obviously know nothing of what movie goers want to see. McDonalds is always hiring. IDIOT!
