Like The White Stripes in reverse, Brighton-based duo Blood Red Shoes comprise a male drummer (Steven Ansell) and a female singer-guitarist (Laura-Mary Carter).
But whereas Jack n’ Meg channel the blues, this pair draw on a noisier, grungier tradition. Maximo Park frontman Paul Smith reckons the duo possess the “best guitar sound since Nirvana,” while Carter confesses to being a fan of such dissonant ‘90s bands as Sonic Youth and Bikini Kill (strange, when you consider she’s only 23).
Certainly, it’s Carter’s heavy-artillery riffage that gives forthcoming single I Wish I Was Someone Better its tooth-rattling power and urgency. Even better, the accompanying video begins and ends with the unspeakably exhilarating sight of the vocalist “machine-gunning” her Fender Telecaster into the camera, Iron Maiden-style.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Ansell and Carter are apparently not, and never were, an “item”. So no White Stripes-style sexual intrigue, sadly.
I Wish I Was Someone Better is out 22 October, followed by the band’s as-yet-titled debut album in early 2008.
