Based on a choppy drumbeat that puts us in mind of The Be Good Tanyas’ fantastic bluegrass version of Prince’s When Doves Cry, Frozen Feet is a breathily-sung, evasive little twister whose exact mood is difficult to locate.
It reminds us of fellow Texans Midlake in the sense that the music conjures images of a sleepily autumnal, sepia-toned America - and yet the lyrical voice is curiously modern, in a post-Radiohead, lost-child, “Everything is broken” kind of way.
The similarities with Midlake should be no surprise, since Tacks The Boy Disaster frontman Evan Jacobs was a founding member of that band, back in the days when they were a jazz-funk collective called The Cornbread All-Stars. Fortunately both he and Midlake seem to have grown out of that sort of thing now.
Frozen Feet is taken from Tacks…’ debut EP Oh Beatrice, which is out 5 November. You’ll find the MP3 hosted on Stereogum.
