What is about the vocoder that turns an unremarkable couplet into a glitter-strewn exhortation to vogue like a leather daddy on amyl? “If you’re right hand is causing you pain, cut it off/If your colours are starting to run, let them run,” sings Kele Orekeke on new single Flux, with the cystal-clear diction of a man with a pair of hiking socks stuffed in his mouth.
So far, so Bloc Party.
Yet whereas Orekeke’s pompous lyrics are usually framed by spiky guitar runs, here they are rendered infinitely more palatable by the presence of a thrumming, hi-NRG electro backing, and – yes! – a vocoder on the vocals. It’s perhaps the first time the famously dour Bloc Party have ever born comparison to Cher, and surely that’s reason to celebrate.
