New To Q: Duffy

Comments

So far the hype machine has designated London’s Adele as the “next Amy Winehouse”, but there’s another artist who will be surely be competing for that crown in 2008. Blessed with the powerhouse vocal chops of a ‘60s blues belter, Duffy won’t be releasing her debut single until December, but she’s already caused a word-of-mouth buzz thanks to this footage of her rehearsing with producer and co-writer Bernard Butler.

It’s somewhat difficult to square that enormous voice with the demure 22-year-old who claims to be “still learning” about soul music, and who only witnessed her first gig last summer (it was, er, Guns N’ Roses). Perhaps such naivete is understandable when you consider Duffy grew up in the sleepy Lleyn Peninsular, North Wales, where there were no record shops.

It was only after she relocated to London in 2006 that she came to the attention of Rough Trade, a label not hitherto known for their love of 60s-inspired soul. Expect to hear a great deal more about Duffy between now and Spring 2008, when her debut album is due.

  • Dear Duffy,

Keep it up girl! You sound a little like Etta James in her hayday. Thanks for the advice on not wasting my money. Already done that before and it wasnt cool. haha

See if you can drop it from the diaphram so you dont put too much strain on those beautiful vocal cords.

    Soulful Peace and Blessings,
    John Benjamin

  • i am not going to slag duffy off because she is a really good singer, however. Rockmerry is a non song - a framework for butler to show off his considerable production skills and a chance for duffy to showcase hr voice... maybe that's how it was meant. but she is...was, an x factor contestant and as such, remains truly in that spirit, a karoke type singer. dont compare her to winehouse -it's like comparing shed seven to the beatles. the amount of money behind this artist is driving the hype. it'll be successful no doubt. but watch the taste makers move on quickly...
