Klaxons tackle an R&B classic

Comments

Yesterday we brought your attention to Foo Fighters’ hell-for-leather re-reading of Wings’ Band On The Run, one of a handful of excellent cover versions on new compilation Radio 1 Established 1967.

The other standout track on the album is Klaxons’ smart, slinky reinvention of Blackstreet’s famously bass-free 1996 Number 1 hit No Diggity (watch the original here).

In some ways Klaxons version is faithful to the original: the trio wisely retain the song’s cheeky piano hook, as well as its loping, low-riding groove, each band member taking it in turn to sing a verse before joining forces for the “Hey-oh hey-oh” bit.

What they add, though - which you’ll need good headphones to detect – is an outrageous splurge of sub-bass in the chorus. It’s just one note, but it lends the track a sense of looming menace that was absent from the original. It’s a subtle but ingenious move.

You can stream the track here.

  • A pretty accurate cover. They haven't done much with it really.
Not a patch on Rooster's rocked up version!
