New To Q: Ra Ra Riot

Comments

On 3 June, John Pike, drummer with Syracuse, NY art-rockers Ra Ra Riot, was found dead, having drowned on his way home from an after-show party in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.

Current single Dying Is Fine was written before his death, but its zen-like sentiments can’t help but sound loaded with redemptive poignancy – especially when you watch the gorgeously-animated accompanying video, which conveys a sense of serene, hello-trees-hello-sky affirmation.

It’s a great song, too, powered by a stuttering drumbeat and accented by subtle string parts courtesy of cellist Alexandra Lawn and violin player Rebecca Zeller. It all builds up into one of those swelling, big-hearted crescendos that Arcade Fire do so well.

Ra Ra Riot are currently supporting Editors on their UK tour. You can download Dying Is Fine from iTunes. Alternatively, you’ll find the MP3 hosted on Oceans Never Listen.
