A pimp-rolling collision of ghetto-funk horns, Philly soul and Curtis Mayfield-style falsetto vocals, The Heavy sound like they belong on the soundtrack to a long-lost Blaxploitation movie – so it comes as some surprise to learn that they actually hail from… Bath.
The band’s scatter-gun potency derives from the interplay between three different singers, though it’s Kelvin Swaby’s gossamer croon that dominates the mix, especially on recent single That Kind Of Man, taken from the fivesome’s debut album Great Vengeance And Furious Fire, out now.
Swaby is a veteran of Bristol’s ‘90s trip-hop scene, having sung in the sadly-overlooked Alpha, responsible for such beautifully languid, after-hours slow-jams as Sometime Later. If there’s any justice, That Kind Of Man will give him, and the rest of The Heavy, some long overdue recognition.

Yeah, Alpha are well overlooked. They have a brand new album out though 'The Sky Is Mine'.
The Heavy are heavy....

keep hearing of Alpha, may need to check them out, but that alpha video doesn't seem to have the singer Kelvin in it?

The singer on Sometime Later is Martin Barnard. Kelvin sang with Alpha on their 2003 album 'Stargazing' You will find Kelvin singing Elvis on Youtube.
Alpha's founders are Corin Dingley who drums on The Heavy album and Andy Jenks. They were signed to Massive's label Melankolic in 1997 and have been going stong ever since.
