New To Q: Foals

Comments

The way Foals present themselves is so self-consciously modern - playing at teenage house parties, appearing in an episode of Skins that was broadcast only on Myspace etc – it’s tempting to lump them in with bleeding-edge, nu-rave try-hards such as Hadouken! And Does It Offend You, Yeah? But that would be a shame, because the Oxford fivesome are actually far more intelligent and interesting than that.

Balloons is the band’s first single proper, and the only song they’ve released so far that’s slated to appear on their debut album, due early 2008. And there’s so much to love about it, it’s hard to know where to start. There’s the tricksy, cascading guitar-riff… the so-subtly-they’re-barely-there stabs of brass… the cavernous drum break-down after the first chorus… the pervasive sense of itchy, high-tensile urgency.

It’s the way Bloc Party would sound if they were as clever and inventive as they thought they were.

We also like the band’s witheringly cynical attitude to the modern music industry, with all its competing corporate demands: check out their recent tour blog, which boasts a level of end-of-tether petulance worthy of Thom Yorke.

Foals, then: we like.
