Ike Turner RIP

Comments

To mark the death at age of 76 of Ike Turner – whose turbulent and controversial private life shouldn’t be allowed to obscure his towering contribution to music – here’s five key moments from his incredible career…

Every Planet We Reach Is Dead
Ike Turner was doing some of his best work right at the end of his life. Just weeks ago he won a Grammy for latest album Risin’ With The Blues. And in 2005 he appeared on Gorillaz’ Demon Days, playing piano on the track Every Planet We Reach Is Dead. Flick to 3.30 to see his showboating piano solo, performed last year at the Manchester Opera House.

Proud Mary
“We gonna do the finish… rough,” promises Tina Turner, entire accurately, of this earth-shaking, 8.5 minute-long live version. Originally performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Proud Mary was the first song Prince ever learnt on guitar.

Rocket 88
This was originally credited, in a nod to the song’s lead vocalist, to Jackie Brenston And His Delta Cats - but Ike Turner was the creative driving force behind the 1951 R&B hit, claimed by many (somewhat meaninglessly) as the “first” rock n’roll record. Much has been made of the “broken” guitar amplifier used on the session, but it’s Turner’s rambunctious piano – which Little Richard later lifted wholesale for Good Golly Miss Molly – that gives the song its electrifying potency.

It’s Gonna Work Out Fine
Ike & Tina Turner’s second single, released in 1961, was their first US Top 20 hit. Here the duo’s transfixing onstage chemistry is obvious - check out the limb-flailing dance-off at the end.
