Like Eva Cassidy, only less dead, Bristolian chanteuse Beth Rowley seems a shoo-in for Radio 2 playlist ubiquity in 2008.
Her target market is easy to pinpoint. The silken, dinner party-friendly voice; the non-threatening beauty; the reverence for generation-straddling standards (her live set includes a cover of Etta James’ immortal I’d Rather Go Blind and Bob Dylan’s I Shall Be Released) – everything about Rowley seems precision-engineered for acceptance by Wogan and Parkinson.
That’s not meant as a snide dig: as an interpretative singer Rowley is genuinely gifted, and far more versatile than, say, Norah Jones, with whom she will no doubt be compared. Nobody’s Fault But Mine, a stately gospel number taken from her current EP Violets, is typical of her timeless, genre-crossing approach, and will also feature on Rowley’s debut album Little Dreamer, due early 2008.
