Born to run

Comments

One of the most startling developments of the new year so far has been the revelation that Pete Doherty, in a bid to drown out the clamour of his smack n’crack cravings, has taken up jogging, and is even considering entering the London Marathon. It’s a wonderful image, the formerly sallow-skinned drug-dustbin squat-thrusting and star-jumping on the streets of East London – especially if you believe The Star’s hilarious claim that Doherty has taken to wearing a sports-bra in order to minimize nipple-chafing (of course he has).

Anyway, it inspired us to list some other note-worthy health freaks, and the methods they use to stay in shape…

Johnny Borrell – jogging
After splitting with actress girlfriend Kirsten Dunst last summer, the Razorlight frontman threw himself into an intense running regime in a bid to quell the gnawing emptiness inside. “I couldn't be happier single. I'm enjoying myself, doing lots of running, keeping fit,” he confided to The Sun, presumably between guttural sobs of despair.

Bob Dylan - boxing
One of the lesser-known facts about Dylan is that he runs a private gym in LA frequented by Hollywood stars such as Will Smith and Gina Gershon. Remarkably, the wizened legend occasionally challenges his glitzy clientele to spar with him, as Quentin Tarantino discovered to his cost: “"He wanted to play hard and nailed me with a really good [punch]. I think it was a right jab.” Oof.

Phil Selway – marathon running
In 2002 the Radiohead drummer completed the London Marathon in four and a half hours, raising £20,000 for The Samaritans. A fitting choice of charity, one could argue, since repeated listens of Amnesiac could drive anyone to contemplate suicide.

Craig David – weight-lifting
Poor Craig David. Ever since becoming a walking punchline thanks to Avid Merrion’s cruel caricature, the formerly smooth-limbed R&B star has sought to bolster his self-esteem with a masochistic schedule of grunting and bicep-flexing. He now looks all inflated and wrong, like a cross between Lionel Richie and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Timbaland – body-building
The R&B super-producer used to weigh 330lbs and suffered from a catalogue of flab-related ailments, including high blood pressure and sleep apnoea. Then he hired a personal trainer, took up a punishing weights regime, and lost over 100lbs in six months. The results were so spectacular he even planned to enter a bodybuilding competition, the Mr Miami Classic, before wisely deciding against it. Perhaps Diddy had a word.
