  • Joy Division -- Closer. Ian's last album, absolutely without a doubt the finest work of art ever achieved by a Britsh Band. Sure there were some great albums and some pop masterpieces by the Beatles or the Stones or even the CURE.

But those don't elevate to the plane of something like a Wilfrid Owen work, a Donne poem, a painting by Francis Bacon, or the genius of Joesph Conrad. Joy Division does, and this was their finest album.

  • wasn't even born in the 60's but so many great British artistes emerged during that decade. How about Beatles - White Album, Zombies - Odyssey & Oracle or Kinks - Village Green Preservation Soc. All killer, no filler! (Don't listen to George Martin - the White Album is a GREAT double album). If only albums these days had the same quality control.

  • i can't understand why this is such a difficult choice, britain has the greatest band ever PINK FLOYD, no one can compare with them on any level, britain is so lucky to have them, think about that:) and vote for DARK SIDE OF THE MOON...

  • I'm stunned by how few here have chosen anything by the Stones. I'm not going to, either, but I find it surprising that one of Britian's very greatest bands is so under-represented. My choice: Amnesiac by Radiohead. Knives Out is the greatest song ever, and the album has a pacing and flow that is unmatched by any other album.

He was right- and we're still waiting for an album more important than definately maybe.

Wot no mentions of Bowie/T.rex so far? jeesh. scary.

Other contenders: Ziggy Stardust, Disintegration - Cure, OK Computer, The Libertines, Orbital - Brown Album, Electric Warrior -T.Rex.

Too many to choose from but my god some of the suggestions on here are awful...

  • Autobahn by Kraftwerk is probs the best British album I've come across-masterpiece. However I would be equally happy at either Live at Leeds by The Whom or Sampooran by Mekaal Hasan. The Clash aren't English you fool, they are Italian. Haven't you seen the video for Shaddap Your Face?

  • Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie is the Best British Album, because it epitomises British orginality and it's influence still resonates in many of the current bands today.
