Ever since ending his career hiatus with 2004’s You Are The Quarry, Morrissey’s songs have belonged to two broad categories: the slow, swelling dirges (Life Is A Pigsty, I Have Forgiven Jesus) and the springy, pugnacious, radio-friendly anthems (You Have Killed Me, The First Of The Gang To Die).
New single That’s How People Grow Up, a prelude to February’s greatest hits set, patently belongs to the latter camp - although it’s distinguished from past efforts by uncharacteristically rococo flourishes of accordion and operatic backing vocals (courtesy of singer-songwriter Kristeen Young, who once claimed Morrissey gave “great cunnilingus”). Happily, eyelid-fluttering lines such as “There are worse things in life than never being someone’s sweetie” drag the song firmly back into classic Moz territory.
Here he is performing the song on The Late Show With David Letterman last June. You can also hear a snatch of the studio version by checking out this month’s Q50.
