Track of the Day: Does It Offend You Yeah?

Comments

For anyone who thought Hadouken! were a bit too monochrome and buttoned-up, along comes London’s Does It Offend You Yeah?, a trio of rambunctious digi-punks with an 80s fixation and a boundless capacity for obnoxious gimmickry.

The daft stage names give a sense of the personalities at work – the singer calls him self Morgan Yeah? – though, as with soft-rockers Palladium, the pseudonyms exist primarily to obscure the band’s unhip, session-musician past (Morgan once played in Rihanna’s backing band; the drummer penned jingles for Mastercard ads).

Couple this with attention-seeking, “We’re mad, we are!” song titles such as 60 Ft Octopus and you’d be given for assuming the band were either a pop-culture prank orchestrated by Chris Morris, or a plot mechanism dreamt up by the writers of Skins.

Against all expectations, however, DIOYY?’s debut album You Don’t Know What You Are Getting Yourself Into (out in March) is both likeable and surprisingly smart – a day-glo, yoof-culture depth-charge that takes in slasher movies, video games, old-school rave and hair metal, all of it spattered against a backdrop of pounding, post-electroclash noise.

One of the album’s more exhilarating cuts is We Are Rockstars, which splices the glammed-up, Vocoder groove of Daft Punk with the grungier, gutsier sonic attack of Justice. More than anything, it exhibits a sense of fun, something the current crop of long-faced dance boffins, from Miss Kittin to LCD Soundsystem, seem to have forgotten how to do.

(What we’ve posted below isn’t the official video, by the way, it’s a fan bootleg uploaded to YouTube. Just in case you thought a looked a bit, you know, rubbish).
