'2080' - Yeasayer
Like currently ubiquitous Afro-beat enthusiasts Vampire Weekend, Yeasayer are a New York band with a fondness for the wider world. African music, Bollywood, sacred tunes of all stripes, all these things inform their thrilling cosmic stew. For example, 2080 is more incantantion than song, a five minute denial of a terrible present ("I can't sleep when I think of the world we're living in") and wish for a better world, full of chanted, layered vocals and tumbling drums.
In case you hadn't already guessed, the slogan on their website - "only enlightenment can prevent terror everywhere" - is confirmation that they're definitely hippies, but in the Flaming Lips rather than 'knit your own yoghurt' sense. Besides, last year's debut album, All Hour Cymbals, is terrific. The quartet tour the UK in March.
