If Brooklyn’s MGMT borrow Flaming Lips’ LSD-laced sense of humour, Sweden’s Surrounded channel the more dreamy, beatific end of Wayne Coyne and co’s output. In other words, they’re more Do You Realize? than She Don’t Use Jelly.
Lest you peg them as mere shoegazers, however, there’s an intriguing undercurrent of rustic Americana lurking beneath the echo-pedal atmospherics. Perhaps that’s because Surrounded hail from Vaxjo, a remote town in Southern Sweden that is abutted by dense forest.
Indeed, it was in a tumbledown barn in the depths of said forest that the fivesome recorded their ecstatically slow-mo debut album, The Nautilus Years. Hence the mood of awed, arcadian bliss that runs through Safe Tomorrow Sun like wind sighing through tree-tops.
The Nautilus Years is released 10 March on One Little Indian.
