Glastonbury New Talent 2008 - the competition that will end with an unsigned band being invited to play at the world’s greatest music festival - has entered its final phase, with the initial deluge of entrants whittled down to a short-list of just twelve hopefuls.
Since the competition launched in December, the judging panel – which includes festival organiser Emily Eavis, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Q Editor Paul Rees – has sifted through thousands of entries. However, the ultimate outcome will be influenced by your input, since you’ll soon have the chance to vote for your favourite act.
The twelve finalists will compete for a slot at the festival by playing a 20-minute set for the judges on 28 and 29 March. The ultimate winner will play either the Other or the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury 2008, 27-29 June.
Ahead of the public vote, you can familiarise yourself with all twelve finalists right now here on Q4music.com:
28 Costumes
Wayne Coyne-endorsed indie troupe from Liverpool, who have already picked up airplay from Radio 1, XFM and MTV2. [Listen]
Andy Hickie & The Merry Maidens
Hickie is a rustic-sounding folkie from North Wales who recently quit his day-job to tour – and live – in a camper van. [Listen]
Boys In A Band
The Faroe Islands’ premier musical export, recalling the fire-and-brimstone alt-rock of Cold War Kids. [Listen]
Charlene Soraia
A BRIT-school graduate and prog-rock enthusiast who does a neat line in smooth-voiced, Feist-style alt-pop. [Listen]
The Golden Silvers
Sharply-dressed, afro-sporting indie mob, with vocals that suggest a less wasted Pete Doherty. [Listen]
Mankala
Based in Bristol, this “Afro Caribbean Fusion Groove” outfit boats members from far afield as Martinique, Zambia, and the Canary Islands. [Listen]
Myth Of Unity
Ferocious, Blackpool-based new-ravers, pitched somewhere between Pendulum and Enter Shikari. [Listen]
Revere
North London multi-instrumentalists, dubbed “gospel for the space-age generation” by The Times. [Listen]
Rod Thomas
Rich-voiced, ‘80s-tinged singer-songwriter who uses an old-school Casio keyboard to augment his smart, sprightly pop songs. [Listen]
Swimming
Nottingham-based five-piece who specialize in a swirling, psychedelic soundscapes. [Listen]
The Franks
Touring extensively in the US has helped this Edinburgh quartet hone their dark-hued epic rock: think Matt Bellamy fronting Editors. [Listen]
Young Runaways
Ukulele-toting Londoners who belong to the Wombats/Pigeon Detectives school of ramshackle, good-time indie. [Listen]
Although the 12 finalists have been decided, the standard of entry was so high the stage bookers at the festival have been given access to all the entrants and some may well end up playing the smaller stages at this year's Glastonbury Festival.

The fact that so many of the blurbs cite the influence of/similarity with other bands says it all - this is a sadly predictable and uninspiringly 'safe' shortlist. Can't even be arsed to vote...

Agreed

...it's strange how almost all the entries sound exactly the same...couldn't they have taken a punt on something different or actually totally unknown?

"...your act was not what the judges were looking for..." So the judges had already decided what would classify as 'new' and 'talent'? There's nothing here that makes you go 'wow, that's interesting!' Or fun, or musical, or different. I expected more than a box-ticking exercise from what looked to be a grown-up panel. Hey ho...

John Peel must be spinnin... makes you realise how much we - and Glastonbury - are gonna miss him.

I don't think all of them sound the same. A lot are typical commercial indie fare, but one or two actually sound promising.

I thought they were going to have seperate competitions for each area like last time. If the competition just includes pyramid and other stages what chance do jazz/funk/world/dance acts have of getting into the festival? Come on glasto sort it out.

I'm a fan of Hey Molly who are from my home town. They're on the uk circuit all the time, they wrok so hard. How there music wasn't selected is unreal. I would choose them above 90% of the bands i hear on a daily basis!! I would advise anyone to check them out at www.myspace.com/heymolly. Bring on Glasto tho!!!! x

Boys in a band look strong and the Golden Silvers sound interesting, good songs.
Charlene has a beautiful voice

What a load of bitter nonsense. I love the variation the panel have gone for. It is illogical to say likening of bands makes them unoriginal - people have to make sense of bands somehow.
Most sound a lot better than the dreary nonsense around at the moment.
Mankala and Swimming sound cool but I think my vote will go to the Franks - proper intense melodic rock music and great vocals. Check 'em out!

I completely agree with the above comment, both about music in general and about that band The Franks. Boys in a Band are ok, but they still sound like everything else out there. The Franks seem to be bringing back epic rocking melody. I hope to see them on that Glastonbury main stage! Can't wait for Glasto now!

I think what's becoming obvious is that Boys in A Band clearly have the most mates, but apart from that I really don't see the appeal. They're not very melodic.
Rod Thomas has a good voice, but the Franks are the only band here it seems with real promise to fill stadiums. Annie Who and Loose Reckoning are ****ing great songs, just checked out their myspace and im hooked. :)
good luck to all of you though

Once again i have to agree with the top comment the music industry has once again delivered the same old same old, with everyone making money out of unsigned bands now the indiustry is making it very clear that they are never going to throw away the attitude of what they think is good selling music every year hundreds of talented unsigned bands go up against a rather boring professional standard and comes out a loser are we always going to have to deal with skinny jeaned indie pop or sorry is it alternative indie pop now, the same old boy and girl bands, ock bands and other nonesensicle music genres, thank you very much for putting 12 bands together to fight over 30 minutes of stage time to be swept off into the background once the industry has made its money and promoted the glastonbury festival to breaking point.

I don't understand everyone's obsession with Revere - yes their music is perhaps a bit different, and the musicianship itself is of a very high standard, but are they really going to set the Glastonbury main stage alight? I've just finished listening to all 12 acts on their myspace and for me the clear winner is The Franks. x
Posted by Sally at 1:35 AM | 10/03/2008 | Report Abuse
Sally, you should see and hear REVERE live and then you'd know what all the fuss is about. They perform with an intensity rarely seen & heard and the whole show is visually stunning. The Franks are fine and have some good tunes but their sound is not exactly new. Think Editors, Franz F and back to Big Country.

BAA , the glastonbury sheep disguised as judges have lost their musical way. I would have hoped to see Birmingham act The Dancehall Terrorists, without them just how festive can your festival be. Shame on you glasto looks like your a sellout before you even print the tickets of shame.
Posted by The Supervisor at 10:30 AM | 10/03/2008 | Report Abuse
Why don't all you bitter losers use the time you're using to throw your toys out the pram to try and write some decent, melodic music?
With the exception of Boys In A Band, who sound rather generic to me, most of the other acts actually appear to be trying to bring melody back into what has become a dire scene.
Like Rod Thomas's set up and love what the franks are doing. Having listened to all 6 of their tracks on myspace, they have really grown on me and each song is completely different - far more rounded and intense than the editors if you ask me.
bon chance a tous, and someone needs to start banning the bitter fools!

Revere are a spectacle to behold live - eight people rocking out and totally lost in what they play. Last time I saw them they had a 30-piece choir in tow as well (along with their usual cellos, violins, trumpets, glockenspiels, marching drums, distortion...). Ace. Loud and beautiful.

Posted by David at 5:33 PM | 10/03/2008 | Report Abuse
I don't agree with some of the comments on here at all.
Glastonbury should be about reviving the old festival spirit. Who cares about "different" - I'd rather have rock done right than a bunch of squealing vocals akin to farmhouse slaughter, a load of dissonant bizarre instruments banging together in a cacophonous mess, or an "artist" who needs a slew of electronic sound effects to cover up a lack of talent.
If you strip away all the cr*p- what REALLY matters is melody and vocals, and the only bands who've seemed to figure that out are The Franks and Andy Hickie. They've got my vote.
Posted by Andrew Thompson at 7:52 PM | 10/03/2008 | Report Abuse
If you melody and vocals then you should listen to more of Revere..... try Tadoma on Revere Unplugged... Find a Safe Place, Maybe in Time... they are all lovely.

Have to say I agree with Andrew Thompson wholeheartedly. We all know the scene is in a rather dire state. I appreciate the inclusions of such bands as Mankala, Revere etc for doing what they're passionate about and they do it well, but for me Glastonbury is about good rock music, and i have to say, though I haven't listened to all entries yet, I'm pretty excited about what the Franks have to offer - lots of growers. Reminds of the good old 90s - oh how i miss thee.

i've had a good listen and there's a lot of decent bands here. the last message really caught my eye, even though it has the 'written by a band member' ring to it! really good vocalist, but to be honest it really strikes me as (i dont know if anyone feels the same, and i dont know if the band were going for this) West End musical themes: lonesome oliver twist singing 'light up your homes tonight', something like that - other people give it a go with this in mind - it's really cool! (and actually all the other songs on their myspace). also could be an advert for British Gas! dont mean to be demeaning guys - it's good stuff, but if you dont win the Glasto contest, definitely try and get ur stuff in West End Theatreland!

Is that aimed at me? I'm not in the band. I'm not even one of their mates actually. I'm a journalist who works for a Preston newspaper. Myth of Unity are from Blackpool which is near us and they entered our Battle of the Bands competition and I thought they were amazing.

I dont know who tro vote for it's between The Franks and Swimming.
Reading this comment page thingy makes me laugh. Everytime there has been a comment made about a band one of revere's many followers make a comment back promoting them. I think it's a member of the band :) with such banal sounds I'd probably do the same, ;)
Posted by briana at 12:27 PM | 18/03/2008 | Report Abuse
This is why I made my earlier comment about the downside of a "competition" like this. Bands, all probably doing really well in their own field making music that has it's own following all pitted together and everyone begins making pointless observations about who is actually making all these comments. I still think half the bands on this list don't actually give a **** about this side of things and would rather just have the opportunity to play to a new audience...whoever...wherever. Any cheers for the individual bands are met by increasingly smug hit backs and the rest spend their time slating everyone but their chosen bands. For those who've actually discovered and like a band they've never heard of through this list, we salute you.
Posted by Stephen at 1:03 PM | 18/03/2008 | Report Abuse
No I am not a member of Revere and I don't think of West End Musicals when I listen to them. I got hooked on them because they have real music and melody lines: like the Moody Blues, the Move, Doors, Beatles... made huge sounds from genuinely new ideas.... that's what they remind me of....it has been a long time since that happened,
Posted by charlie at 7:12 PM | 18/03/2008 | Report Abuse
hmmmmmm
i dont mind revere but you would have thought with 8 members and all those instruments at their disposal they might have developed their ideas a little more. 6 minutes plus of those two melodic lines is a little much but good on them for being different.
28 costumes, Runaways, Franks - all sound promising to me.

Posted by Sheila at 10:52 PM | 18/03/2008 | Report Abuse
Before you start, I am not a member of any of these bands but after listening to them all, I have to agree that Revere have something completely different. Charlie, I would say that they have a very ethereal quality in some of the things on myspace - their music is making me think of open spaces and possibilities (what else is Glastonbury about but expression?) I am very disheartened by all of the obvious bitterness of some of the posters here. If you did not get in, I am sorry but when you are selecting who to give a prize to - unless you get a big personal donation - you don't go for the one you don't like.
I don't think you can say a bad thing about any of the bands on this list. Having seen one live, I am certain that they would entrance a Glastonbury audience. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of female representation and seems to be a fair and good cross-section of today's rising musical talent.
We should all be grateful that at least, with it being Glastonbury, we can be certain that we are not going to be forced to put up with the kind of mass-produced garbage which is amped out of the subwoofers in a souped up GT bombing up and down every street. I for one, would take any of these over that.
As well as being grateful, please show a bit more respect - after all, all of the bands in the shortlist made it this far on merit. I look forward to hearing more of all of them, and I think I have to say especially Revere.
Posted by Indiana at 1:09 AM | 19/03/2008 | Report Abuse
28 Costumes ftw.
The mass poduced garbage we are all being forced to put up at the mo is Bland indie. Last time I checked chavs in souped up GT's dont sterotypically listen to Bland Indie or maybe it has come to that.
After listening to all the contestants I really agree with earlier comments and think Revere definatley have a future in TV, Commercials and Lift Music.
I work for a lift installation company we use unsigned bands (obviously non-offensive) for our lift music (costs less). Your music is certainly good enough for our lifts. Good luck to all bands you've all done well to get this far
Posted by Jones at 10:58 AM | 19/03/2008 | Report Abuse
Very clever and original mick-take of my name - you are beyond doubt the first person ever to think of putting the word "Jones" after "Indiana" - how very clever you are.
As for lift music, I think that you are betraying some sadistic tendencies if you seriously think that this music is INoffensive and "good enough for lifts". Your more elderly customers would be in danger of finding it a bit oppressive - possibly to the point of distress. But as I am a secondary teacher and I deal with more humanistic problems than you're ever likely to face in your line of work I will humour you. Let me tell you about a little experiment that I carried out today. I teach a young dance class every week at the moment (most with behavioural problems), and today using the class computer I logged on here, played music from a few of the bands and asked for feedback on how "choregraphable" the music was. The kids (who are mostly used to listening to whatever is chartbound these days apart from a couple with Metallica Appreciation Complex) thought that it was all (quotes) "excellent", "mental", "a bit heavy", "so good", "grungy". "makes me think of a little girl having nightmares about the monster under the bed".
If 10-12 year olds can get all this from a few songs, surely you (assuming you are older) can get a bit more than "lift music"??
Posted by Indiana at 6:02 PM | 19/03/2008 | Report Abuse
"makes me think of a little girl having nightmares about the monster under the bed".
geez, that kid is certainly a poet in the making! wonder which song that was about.
I think most of the artists up here clearly have a lot of potential, and overall the judges did well in covering a variety of genres and locations across the UK. I wish the best of luck to everyone- though I think if I had to vote, it would be for Swimming.

"Very clever and original mick-take of my name - you are beyond doubt the first person ever to think of putting the word "Jones" after "Indiana" - how very clever you are."
Firstly my last name is Jones. I think Jones is more likely to be my surname than Indiana is to be your forename
Secondly I seem to be more clever than your parents, who gave you such a silly moniker.
Thirdly I didn't mean to offend you (first time round at least) and calling your music innoffensive was a compliment . I see you guys as a credible Westlife.......Or Il Divo without the looks. If this is offensive I fully apologise as it seems to have got your back up. Sorry.
Fourthly If you showed those kids Revere and they thought it was "mental" "grungy" or "a bit heavy" trust me they have more than behavioural problems. To be honest it all sounds dodgy to me. Your name is Indiana?, You Teach? (Like Indiana Jones), kids still listen to metallica? And they think Revere are Grungy? Hmmmmmmmm?
Nobody has used the term Grunge since 98
I smell the blood of a middle aged man trying to drop cool terms in an effort to be down wi da kids. Drop it friend, just be yourself people will like you more.
Lastly. The offer for us to put your music in shopping centres around the country is still open I'll myspace you the link to the app form. Dont reject the old folk!!!! who do you think'll be buying your records when your all big and famous. I see big things for you guys.

Indiana is the name of my dog; I am a woman; and you cannot spell. I also have nothing whatsoever to do with any of these bands, but have seen one of them live. You really are a strange person to have read so much into my background, and since I have also been teaching internet safety, I shall follow the rules I was preaching - "if you meet a strange, stalking person on the internet, don't carry on conversing".
By the way, my worst s1 classes (I live and work in Scotland) could spell whether correctly.
You are a patronising and very arrogant young man, and I think you need to go back to school to distinguish between weather that is rainy and whether this or that. This is my final advice to you AND I am now even more in favour of Revere winning this competition because such condescending idiocy as yours deserves its' comeuppance.

Indiana you seem to be just as arrogant as your accusing this other person of being. He was a bit on the rude side but this is a message board so it's free speech for all, yeah?
Although I think you're both better just to leave it there and not post again, I agree with 1 thing: Revere are pretty good live. The singer's voice doesn't need anything done to it and the gigs have the sound of an orchestra but I suppose that there is something "grungy" about it - I've used that word a lot btw.

Myth of Unity are the real thing inspired lyrics, with a new approach to musical backing arrangements. They are very different to the norm so you either love or hate them. They will generate a big fan base with or without Glastonbury they have my vote. Good luck to all the bands.

It is truely pathetic to see fans (who are more likely to be band members in disguise) slagging each other off. I'm sure this message board was created to give fans a chance to give their support for their favourite artists and say who they like / who they dislike - MUSICALLY! So what if someone disagree's with you...lets stop challenging each other's intellect and criticising each other. This is surely about the music and WHO should open Glastonbury 2008? After listening to each artist and taking into account their potential live sound / festival audience, I have only found two bands that really stand out. The Franks and Golden Silvers. To me, they sound like great live bands and will be great for a festival. Just my opinion - feel free to leave endless messages mocking my musical taste, or perhaps you would like to crticise my name...? Good luck to The Franks and Golder Silvers x

I wouldn't call myself a die-hard of any particular music genre, but i am really into the live music experience. I think you can gage so much from a main stage live experience like how or if the band's sound could be transferred well to a recodred piece and if thye are marketable. Likewise hearing tracks in more intimate settings, like at home its crucial to visualise the band live, if they will ever be successful in all aspects of the public music domain. Music at the moment is getting me slightly disheartened by samey-monologues which roar in grey tones. I miss the classic rock anthems, and slow heart wrenching acoustics of the past, and in terms of style sophistication, and melodic drive, from this list of up-and-comings, i can see The Franks with the most potential taking their sound to a new musical level. I just think they've got a fresh sound that will bring something special to Glastonbury, with tracks which i'd be equally excited to watch live or listen to more intimately! But hey it could go any way...

I totally agree with you. The Franks (in my opinion) have a very exciting sound, that has not been witnessed in the UK music scene in a very long time. For once, I am excitied by a band who does not have to rely on being quirky or overtly indie. The music speaks for itself :)

I have listened, and am a whole hearted supporter of The Franks. Sustaining a true tone that instigates a route to the soul and mind, who could resist those melodies and vocals? I could and would only vote for the franks. Havent heard anything as good as this in a while

It took a while but I have read most of the comments above and some have been interesting/thought provoking. Personally I was hoping to see Emma Cantons (jazz) in the list but she has not appeared to be what the judges were looking for.
Still, check her out at myspace.com/emmacantons She is definitely different form the 12 above.
Apart from that i enjoyed listening to the selection, but if i had to vote i would go for the band whose music i thought would 'hold' the audience the most... Glastonbury is big group of people to entertain for 30 mins / 1 hour!

Charlene Soraia what a voice!!!!! Just great she should have been in the Jazz stage. I loved her music and she was so charismatic.
I just heard a few songs and I fell in love with her music I even bough her cd.

By comparing bands to other existing acts, they risk people writing them off before they have heard them, rather than writing intriguing descriptions and asking people to look further than their fist impressions based on comparisons. If I had submitted my band I wouldn't want us to be compared to anyone. I'm glad I didn't.

have to say, i don't like any of these bands at all. Why do they all have to be playing 4/4 mainstream indie? i really expected better
