Something a bit different today, in that our featured track can’t be bought or downloaded, and doesn’t even have a title; instead it takes the form of a strangely beautiful video filmed by two British Antarctic Survey researchers, Jim Elliot and Rob Webster.

Over-wintering on the white continent, the pair alleviated the boredom and isolation by turning objects found in their research station – saucepans, wine-glasses etc – into percussion instruments, then adding acoustic guitar and violin into the mix, creating an haunting, folk-tinged instrumental that neatly complements the silent, ice-bound beauty of their surroundings. Somewhere, Sigur Ros are grinding their teeth with jealousy.

The clip was recorded at the Rothera Research Station, which is fast becoming Antarctica’s musical hub: it was at Rothera that the band Nunatak played a concert for 17 people in aid of Live Earth in 2007.

[Note: there’s no sound for the first 30 seconds].
