With the first signs of summer finally appearing through these grey English skies, it’s a good time for the music of Pete Greenwood. Born in Leeds but now relocated in London, he plays a delicate and enchanting blend of folk that’s perfect to soundtrack a summer of lost and lazy afternoons.
He's soon to release Penny Dreadful, his second single, and the first release on new label Redbricks Records. It’s a charming, wistful tune full of nostalgia and hope. There are certain shades of Nick Drake in Greenwood’s lilting, melancholy voice, and of Jose Gonzales in the intricately finger-picked melodies of his acoustic guitar.
Greenwood's bright and breezy songs are offset by his dulcet, drawling vocals, which combine with the upbeat, lilting rhythm to give the whole thing a rather bittersweet edge. But instead of becoming a self-indulgent lament, they are carried by their uplifting, sunny melodies. By making such optimistic lullabies for the broken hearted, Greenwood’s future is surely as bright as his songs.
