Unfinished Business is the first single by this promising West London band, released through their own label, Chess Club Recordings (although following a music business bun-fight future releases will come via Fiction, home of Snow Patrol and Ian Brown). A song as elegant and majestic as the ancient game itself, Unfinished Business bristles with promise and energy, permeated throughout by a haunting organ that conjures up a sinister sadness. It's a sound that's somewhere between the Spingsteen-esque bombast of the last Killers album and the more murky depths of Echo And The Bunnymen at their most gloomy.
Formed out of the ashes of a band called Fear Of Flying, White Lies have been together only a matter of months. The trio played their first gig back in February and are all 20 years old or younger, but their music lends them a surprising level of musical and lyrical maturity – they’re anthemic without being pompous, emotional without being sentimental. Next month sees them embark on a nationwide tour, before hitting the festival circuit in July – including a brief stint in Japan. Unfinished Business is released today.
