Sigur Ros Return

Comments

Icelandic quartet Sigur Ros have announced they are breaking new ground by featuring a track sung in English on their next speedily-recorded album. Details of the new release were announced on the band’s website today and the band’s fifth album sees the band recording outside their homeland for the first time.

með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (which translates as With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly), is to be released by EMI on June 23 – just a month after its completion - and a live stream of the album will be available from June 9 to anyone who pre-orders online at the band’s website. A free download, the polyrhythmic Gobbledigook, is also available to site visitors from today.

Previous albums have been sung by frontman Jónsi in Icelandic or in their self-created “hopelandic” language. It was recorded in, New York, London and Havana, as well as their more familiar turf Reykjavik, by renowned producer Flood.

For the recordings the band have moved away from the usual technical perfection of previous albums and have stripped back the effects which marked previous releases. One track ára bátur was recorded live in one take with the London Sinfonietta and London Oratory Boys’ Choir, with a cast list involving 90 musicians and singers.

The album’s cover features an image by visual artist Ryan McGinley - who first met the band six years ago when he photographed Jónsi – and comes from a flyer for his recent exhibition I Know Where The Summer Goes which was emailed to the band as they were seeking inspiration.

You can read the inside story of the making of the album exclusively in the July issue of Q – on sale June 1 - which follows its gestation period over several months.
