Bo Selector

Where would rock and roll be without the bomp-a-bomp-bomp bomp bomp beat, of which Bo Diddley was the architect? It certainly wouldn’t have these gems. In tribute to Bo Diddley who died earlier this week, here are five tracks indebted to the musical pioneer – plus a chance to see the man himself in all his rectangular-guitared glory.

The Strangeloves – I Want Candy
From 1965 - famously covered by Bow Wow Wow in 1982 but we couldn’t quite bring ourselves to post a video featuring a 15-year-old suggestively licking an ice cream.

Rolling Stones - Not Fade Away
A 1964 vintage and itself a cover of a Buddly Holly song.

The Clash – Rudie Can’t Fail
From the band’s London Calling album in 1979.

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
It may not be so explicit but Johnny Marr is playing the Diddley beat, although the rhythm section has another agenda.

The Who - Magic Bus
Pete Townshend's 1968 approximation of the beat reached a lowly 26 in the charts but is still a live favourite.

And finally, here's Bo Diddley performing Who Do you Love?
