Liam Finn: Second Chance

You may already know him as a musician in his dad Neil Finn’s band. While most 15–year-olds were worrying about exams and the onset of acne, Liam Finn was already an accomplished musician, playing alongside esteemed figures like Johnny Marr who would occasionally join the Crowded House frontman for live shows and play Smiths classics There Is A Light That Never Goes Out and How Soon Is Now?

Such precocious talent was surely going to lead to him stepping out of his father’s shadow and now he has. His debut solo album I’ll Be Lightning is released on July 14 through Transgressive (home to Iron & Wine, The Shins, Foals) and the 23-year-old plays almost every instrument. London-based Kiwi Finn also writes, produces and engineers all his own material as well as taking his own publicity shots and creating the album artwork. Scary isn’t it (as is his beard)?

Although he clearly has the Finn family ear for a compelling melody, his material seriously rocks out in a way his dad rarely does., although the first, the exhilarating Second Chance released on June 30, is a more restrained affair.

  • The betchadupa albums are both worth checking out! Didn't Liam also tour with Eddie Vedder recently?

  • Liam Finn - taking the best bits from the legacies of his father and uncle and making his own way forward.

A brilliant artist in all ways who deserves to be huge. And man what a beard!
