You can often get the measure of a band by the quality of their covers, and for sheer variety you have to hand it to The Courteeners. For their new single No You Didn’t, No You Don’t they have added five covers for the B-sides of the various formats, ranging from songs made famous by Mama Cass to more contemporary fare from Laura Marling - each of them apparently showcasing the band's influences (come on you always knew there was a Sugabababes element to their work).
With No You Didn't ... (out on June 23), the mouthy Mancs (oh alright, they're from Middleton which is actually in the fine borough of Rochdale) will be hoping to emulate the top five success of their debut album St Jude, buoyed by appearances at Glastonbury, Wireless and T In The Park.
For their covers bonanza the band have tackled the Velvet Underground's I’m Sticking With You, Sugababes' About You Now, Dream A Little Dream Of Me (which has been recorded by stars such as Cass Elliott, Frankie Laine and Doris Day), Laura Marling's New Romantic and Out To Get You by James.
The Velvets cover is a fairly basic but faithful rendition with Liam's accent sounding even more pronounced. Hear it here.

Never associate Middleton with Rochdale...it's wrong.
The good people of Middleton never do. (Paul Scholes, Steve Coogan)
Middletonians or North Mancunians please.
