So it looks like Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood’s marriage may be over after his reported extended booze binge with a Russian teenage friend. Well at least according to The Sun.
Wood has had a long, complicated relationship with the bottle, and despite efforts to cut the habit, has often slipped off the wagon in spectacular fashion. It’s a sad and desperate situation for his family. but to lighten the mood a little and perhaps provide a little soundtrack to his latest sad drink-sodden escapade, here are some of the world’s finest drinking songs.
Perhaps the finest example is Charles Aznavour’s (pictured) magnificent Je Bois (I Drink), a lyrically inspired journey through the hazards of booze which still makes the downsides poetically attractive. Alright, this version’s in French but he does give an extensive English translation as he introduces the track.
I Drink – Charles Aznavour
Cigarettes and Alcohol – Oasis
The Bottle - Gil Scott-Heron
Born Slippy – Underworld
Whiskey in the Jar - Thin Lizzy
The Pogues – Sally Maclennane
