Jack White chosen for Bond theme

Comments

It's a rather unlikely combination but Jack White has been lined up to record the theme song to the next James Bond film, alongside Alicia Keys.

The track, Another Way To Die, will be the first duet in Bond history and features in the new film Quantum Of Solace which is due to be released in November. Other names which had been attached to the movie, which again stars Daniel Craig who led the cast of previous film Casino Royale, included Amy Winehouse although sessions with Mark Ronson came to nothing. Leona Lewis was also mooted as a possible candidate.

However, film-makers ended the speculation today by confirming White Stripes and Raconteurs frontman White will team up with the soul star for the 22nd Bond movie.

White wrote and produced the song as well as drumming on the track which will appear on the soundtrack to be released on October 28. The score will be composed by David Arnold who has worked on numerous Bond films over the past few years.

Producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said: "We are delighted and pleased to have two such exciting artists as Jack and Alicia, who were inspired by our film to join together their extraordinary talents in creating a unique sound for Quantum  of
Solace."

It is not White's first association with the movie industry - he has previously appeared in Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain, as well as contributing to the soundtrack. He and Meg White also appeared in Jim  Jarmusch’s  Coffee  & Cigarettes, and let's not forget, he once dated Renee Zellweger.

What do you think ... Jack and Alicia - good thing/bad thing? have your say below.

And here are some of the greats from previous Bond escapades:

Paul McCartney - Live and Let Die (Live and Let Die, 1973)
The ex-Beatle received a lot of stick for recording this stormer in 1973, but it stands up as one of the best themes. Here’s his fiery version from this year’s Brits.

Moby - James Bond Theme (Tomorrow Never Dies, 1997)
Much better than Sheryl Crow’s turgid title theme, Moby’s remix of the iconic Monty Norman theme for Brosnan’s second turn in the tux updated the classic perfectly, preparing the super-spy for the 21st Century.

Duran Duran - View To A Kill (View To A Kill, 1985)
The video may be every bit as bad as Roger Moore’s final turn as 007, but the song stands up as a bit of a guilty pleasure and one of the band's best.

Nancy Sinatra - You Only Live Twice (You Only Live Twice, 1967)
John Barry’s oriental flavored theme was originally written for Frank Sinatra. He said no but offered his daughter insteadf, and a 60s classic was born.

John Barry Orchestra - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, 1969)
Louis Armstrong’s We Have All The Time In The World may be more fondly remembered, but John Barry’s thrilling orchestral theme also deserves its place in Bond history.

And finally…
Here’s Radiohead’s brilliant cover of Nobody Does It Better which was originally done by Carly Simon for The Spy Who Loved Me
