Weller turns back the clock

Comments

Maybe it was David Cameron’s new-found fondness for his earliest incarnation, but Paul Weller seems determined to reclaim his old Jam hit Eton Rifles. Only recently he used the pages of Q to lambast the Tory leader who had shown a fondness for the band in an interview with The Spectator.

“Was he not listening to the lyrics? Is he thick? He probably thinks Eton Rifles is a jolly song about him and his mates at school,” Weller opined in Q’s July issue. Whatever his motivation, the Modfather has begun to revive the song which like much of the material from his angry young Jam days has rarely been aired in his solo years.

Last night was a case in point when he performed the 1979 top three hit in front of an audience including Carl Barat, Peaches Geldof and SFA’s Gruff Rhys, and tore through a blistering set at Camden’s Koko with more energy than a man who has just turned 50 really ought to have.

Headlining day two of iTunes London Festival, Weller mixed selections from his recent, number one album 22 Dreams with tracks from across his 30-year career, including The Changing Man and a trip-hop rendition of Wild Wood.

Bequiffed Scottish rockers Glasvegas also shared the bill, their Shangri-Las meets The Jesus And Mary Chain brand of doom-rock illustrating just why they’ve become one of the most talked about new bands in Britain.
