Singer/songwriter Matthew Jay was signed to EMI nearly a decade ago, releasing a debut album Draw to positive reviews. As with so many aspiring acts fledgling talents in the music industry, circumstances and ill fate conspired to stifle the furthering of his career. A US tour was cancelled in the wake of 9/11 and Matthew parted company with his label. While continuing to write and record, he enrolled for a masters degree in music and had moved into his student digs then just days before his course was due to begin he had an unexplained fall from a seventh floor window and was killed.
Determined that his music should live on, Matthew’s family – themselves musicians – set about the task of completing his demos, in a similar manner to the way John Lennon’s recordings, Real Love and Free As A Bird, were enhanced by the rest of the Beatles for the Anthology project.
So now five years after his death his unfinished songs were this week released as the album Further Than Tomorrow, an affecting collection of songs fleshed out by a full band, which included Matthew’s brother Edward.
Like the rest of the album, the track She Didn’t Understand shows a seamless integration; it is impossible to tell the demo was written in isolation from the rest of the track.
