Nick Harrison – Oi Rude Boy
With a title that namechecks a couple of musical movements (of sorts) from days gone by, you could have put money on their being a retro element to Harrison’s first single.
The emphasis here is on a Police-like appropriation of reggae-beats and a touch of Specials brass, although weirdly it is not a million miles away from the sound forged by hippy groovers Here & Now, beloved of tea-cosy hatted, patchouli scented freaks.
At times Harrison – who looks somewhere between emo-kid and a member of the mid-60s Kinks judging from his promo shots – chooses to order his lyrics in a way that Yoda would have been proud, but Oi Rude Boy is a pacy, competent and confident debut. It's out on August 25 as a download and seven-inch single.
