Teddy Thompson - In My Arms
It’s probably self-evident that following in a parent’s footsteps may not always be the charmed path that some might expect. No matter how great the talent and the respect their parents command, the second generation star often faces an uphill battle.
Like his friend Rufus Wainwright before him, Teddy Thompson has years of releases behind him (prior to his eponymous 2000 debut he played on his father Richard’s albums and wrote and performed on much of his mother Linda’s return) before making any great impact on the collective conscious. Thankfully with his next LP A Piece of What You Need looks set to follow Wainwright to gain a wider audience, consolidating the strides he made with his last original album Separate Ways.
This time he has teamed up with producer Marius de Vries (stretching the Rufus parallels still further, as de Vries was behind Want One) whose delicate polish and lush, clear orchestrations have graced Madonna and Massive Attack albums and the Moulin Rouge! Soundtrack. “He's taken the arrangements up a notch. There was nothing off-limits, nothing that was too weird or too difficult,” said Thompson.
The first song from the album In My Arms soothes like a warm breeze, his mellifluous voice, coating a simple countrified strummer which stays on the right side of saloon rock.
In My Arms is out on August 18, with A Piece Of What You Need out a week later.
