The Automatic - Steve McQueen
Anyone who has been to see the new Pixar film Wall-e will have a vivid example of how The Automatic created a, ahem, monster. There they would have seen a trailer for forthcoming animated soon-to-be kids’ hit Igor with a familiar theme tune. Yes, the band’s ubiquitous track Monster is now being used in multi-million dollar movies and although they are haunted by it, at least they can take some financial comfort.
Still the band have moved on musically and physically for second album This Is A Fix. The Automatic which released Not Accepted Anywhere now has a new line-up. Founding member Alex Pennie has left amicably wth former Yourcodenameis:milo frontman Paul Mullen now absorbed into the personnel. The sound too is more muscular with an extra guitarist on board, certainly on the evidence of the band’s new single Steve McQueen.
With pounding precision drumming, this is windswept power-pop with big ideas. “I was the teenage Steve McQueen, my best performance escaping …” sings Rob Hawkins. It is complemented by stunning video shot in an airliner graveyard in the Mojave desert., heavy on bleak, decaying, blistering atmosphere
Steve McQueen is released on August 18
