One man bands have had a bad press for many years. Blame those blokes armed with kazoos, a bass drum on a backpack and woefully inadequate canon of tunes capable of being rendered listenable in such a format. Leo Sayer’s dreadful mid-70s hit didn’t help either. But thankfully we have wave of musicians (although admittedly small) who show the solo musician can pull it off admirably. Liam Finn can dazzle by handling everything himself and now we have 22-year-old Rob Jones who operates under the ridiculous name The Voluntary Butler Scheme.
His is a delightfully lo-fi DIY approach but the simplicity and strength of his tunes mean that they avoid sounding too ramshackle. Somehow on new single he manages to combine a stomping beat with handclaps, Bontempi organ, harmonica and a hearty raspberry of a synth bassline. The lyrics of longing about running shoes, coffee, MP3 players and turning vegetarian are clearly quite daft but utterly endearing.
Trading Things In is out next week and you can catch Jones, from Stourbridge, at Latitude this weekend
