Track of the day: The Watson Twins

The Watson Twins - Just like Heaven

You have probably come across The Watson Twins through their collaboration with Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis on her Rabbit Fur Coat album. The raven-haired identical twins have now launched their careers in their own right with an album of achingly gorgeous alt-country, Fire Songs.

One of the many engaging things about the duo is the way they apply their haunting musical take to tracks with which you are already familiar. Take their version of Neil Young’s Powderfinger which becomes a thing of dreamy beauty in their hands, winding down with a beat that sounds like a Grandfather clock.

But their masterstroke is a cover of The Cure’s ‘80s hit Just Like Heaven. Of course covering the track is nothing new with Dinosaur Jr in particular overhauling the track with a coruscating, frenetic 1989 version. But Chandra and Leigh Watson change the mood completely, slowing it down to a languorously picked ballad, their enchanting harmonies sending prickles down the neck of any right-thinking person; a wheezing harmonica adding to the dynamic. And unlike J Mascis’s rendition, it has a proper ending!
