Those with long memories for soft rock also-rans will immediately identify Nelson as those long-haired blonde twins (and sons of Ricky Nelson) who were trying to make it around the same time that Poison were knocking around with their comedy poodle cuts and were probably last seen in some VH1 where-are-they-now? feature.
This Nelson is, of course, a totally different band, and despite naming themselves after either a Lancashire town or a Battle of Trafalgar-winning Admiral, they are French.
United by a love of The Beatles, New Order and Talking Heads, the quartet formed after meeting at a Paris college where they were studying sound engineering. A quick listen to their debut album Revolving Doors also reveals an fairly obvious debt to Joy Division and early Bunnymen too. They have been instrumental in giving a number of fellow Parisian bands a leg up via their Bar 3 club nights which they staged in the city.
A few seconds in on Slow Falling and you would imagine you were heading off into some sort of electro-disco territory, but then the ringing guitars kick in and slowly build to create a heightening sense of drama, climbing towards an oppressive Joy Division-like guitar explosion.
The band are due to play a number of UK dates to tie in with their album’s release on September 29, while a new single The (Over) Song is due for release a week earlier.
