Track of the day: Red Light Company

Red Light Company - Meccano
Everyone knows that all the cool bands toy with Lego. After all, it’s perfect for videos and, well, erm, there is a whole land of it. so it takes a bold act like Red Light Company to choose to celebrate the overlooked, superseded joy of the bolt-it-yourself construction classic Meccano in their latest single.

The cosmopolitan band (between them they have roots in Australia, Japan and Wyoming, as well as a the rather more prosaic Bridgend and Maidenhead), have chosen the now rather forgotten toy as a touchstone for childhood in this tale of the increasing distance of age between friends and “the regret of a passing friendship”.

Despite the lyrical lament, the track remains musically upbeat with the longing of Richard Frenneaux’s dreamy feminine vocals (reminiscent of the much underrated Delays) and chunky optimistic guitars and value added chimes. The London-based quintet have an ear for melody akin to Keane (which is a good thing!).

Meccano, which is currently on the Q Radio playlist, is out this week.
