Elbow are to follow their Mercury success with an album for children, they have revealed.
The band, who won the Nationwide Mercury Prize this month for fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid, want the music to tie in with an animated film. They are currently trying to find the right story on which to base the project.
Singer and lyricist Guy Garvey said the late 70s album The War Of The Worlds, created by Jeff Wayne and involving stars such as Phil Lynott and Justin Hayward as well as narrator Richard Burton, was an inspiration.
Garvey told Billboard: "We initially thought that it would be great to make music for children because the lads in the band have got kids and they were saying how little really decent music for children there is. The more that we thought about it the more that we liked the idea.
"We've quite often been up for having songs on children's animated films, but we thought that it would be great to actually be at the starting point for that process. I want to do something that really fires kids’ imaginations "
The Bury quintet are currently casting around for ideas for the project which will be ongoing while the band record their fifth album proper which will take place around a forthcoming tour, kicking off next month.
Other acts which have created albums for children have included They Might Be Giants and St Etienne, while in 2006 a number of bands recorded tracks for the Save The Children album Colours Are Brighter including Franz Ferdinand, Belle And Sebastian and The Flaming Lips.
