George Michael has pledged to "sort myself out" after his arrest in a public toilet with drugs which are thought to have included crack cocaine.
The star, who recently announced his retirement from large scale performances, was cautioned for the possession of class A and class C drugs. He was arrested at Hampstead Heath in north London, close to where the singer has a home.
A police spokesman said: "A 45-year-old man was arrested on 19 September on suspicion of possession of drugs in the Hampstead Heath area."
After the incident the star has released a statement to apologise for his behaviour. He said: "I want to apologise to my fans for screwing up again, and to promise them I'll sort myself out. And to say sorry to everybody else, just for boring them."
Michael, who recently completed his first major tour for 15 years to celebrate a quarter of a century in the public eye since first finding fame with Wham!, first ran into trouble with the police in 1998 when he was arrested in toilet in Beverly Hills, California, for lewd conduct. It prompted him to come out.
More recently the singer - who has spoken openly about his private drug use - was found slumped in his car in late 2006. And in 2007 he was given a two-year driving ban after pleading guilty to driving while unfit through drugs.
Shortly afterwards he said the death of his mother in 1997 had affected his behaviour.
In an interview with Michael Parkinson he said: "I know I have a very self-destructive tendency since my mother died, I have got to be honest. That has kind of made itself clear in other ways."
