Eugene McGuinness – Moscow State Circus
Eugene McGuinness may have the cherubic features and complexion of a teenager but the lyrical incision and insight of his songs - and their delivery – suggest a man of twice his age. At just 22 McGuinness is about to release his debut album proper, although he already has a mini-album under his belt.
This time around for his eponymous collection, the London-born, Liverpool-educated musician has assembled a band to flesh out his many-headed songs. His new single Moscow State Circus, like much of his work, has a refreshingly spontaneous, one-take feel owing to its unforgiving live recording which doesn’t dress up his occasionally faltering, fallible vocals.
“I’m as subtle and as playful as a hammer-headed shark, but I could name you every service station on the M6 off by heart,” he sings on the track, which is out on October 27. Nice video of dancing fencers too.
